A search was underway Monday for the driver of a silver sedan who struck and killed a 72-year-old woman and her dog in a Costa Mesa intersection and then fled.
The crash occurred at 6:53 a.m. Sunday in the area of Mesa Drive and Irvine Avenue, according to California Highway Patrol Officer Florentino Olivera.
The pair were in the crosswalk when they were struck by a silver sedan that was southbound on Irvine Avenue, Olivera said.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County coroner’s office. Her name was not released pending notification of relatives.
The vehicle that left the scene was described as possibly a Toyota Camry or a Mitsubishi with a spoiler.
The vehicle sustained some right front damage, Olivera said.
“We had some witnesses,” he said. “We’re working some leads right now.”
