Orange County sheriff’s officials Friday released the names of the deputies involved in the fatal shooting of a transient in San Clemente.
Deputies Eduardo Duran and Jonathan Israel were involved in the Sept. 23 fatal shooting of 42-year-old Kurt Andras Reinhold, said Orange County sheriff’s Sgt. Dennis Breckner.
Duran is a 14-year veteran of the sheriff’s department and Israel has been with the department for eight years, Breckner said.
Duran is back on duty but was reassigned from a homeless outreach detail. Israel also returned to duty, but was recently placed on paid administrative leave for a reason not related to Reinhold’s shooting, Breckner said. Sheriff’s officials declined to release the reason for Israel going on leave.
The release of the names of the deputies comes two days after sheriff’s officials released a “critical incident video” of the deadly encounter with Reinhold as part of a policy of providing more information on use of force conflicts.
Reinhold’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the county in December.
