Famed golfer Tiger Woods suffered “multiple leg injuries” Tuesday when the vehicle he was driving rolled off a winding road in the Rancho Palos Verdes area.
The crash was reported at about 7:12 a.m. on Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse Road, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.
“The vehicle sustained major damage,” according to a sheriff’s department statement. “The driver and sole occupant was identified as PGA golfer, Eldrick `Tiger’ Woods. Mr. Woods was extricated from the wreck with the `jaws of life’ by Los Angeles County firefighters and paramedics, then transported to a local hospital by ambulance for his injuries.”
Fire officials said Woods suffered moderate to critical injuries. In a statement to Golf Digest, Woods’ agent Mark Steinberg said, “Tiger Woods was in a single-care accident this morning in California where he suffered multiple leg injuries. He is currently in surgery and we thank you for your privacy and support.”
The circumstances of the crash were under investigation. His vehicle was traveling north on Hawthorne Boulevard at the time of the accident.
Woods, 45, who was born in Cypress, was the host of The Genesis Invitational golf tournament that was held at Riviera Country Club over the weekend.
