A fire damaged four homes and killed a pet dog in Santa Ana Wednesday.

The blaze broke out about 12:50 p.m in the 1000 block of West Second Street, said Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Thanh Nguyen.

It started in a backyard of a duplex and quickly spread to and damaged four homes, displacing 19 adults and 13 children, Nguyen said.

One pet dog survived and another died in the blaze, Nguyen said.

One person was assessed by paramedics at the scene, but declined further treatment.

The cause of the blaze remained under investigation, Nguyen said.
