Christen Press scored in the 42nd minute and DiDi Haracic made one save for the shutout as the Angel City Football Club defeated the reigning National Women’s Soccer League champion Washington Spirit, 1-0, Sunday at Washington.

Press controlled a long free kick by Vanessa Gilles about 30 yards from the goal, drove past defender Morgan Goff and put a curving right-footed shot from about 15 yards around defender Emily Sonnett and past goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury inside the right goalpost for her first goal of the regular season.

The lone shot on goal for Washington (1-1-0) came two minutes into first-half stoppage time when Anna Heilferty took a shot from just inside the penalty area that Haracic went to the ground to corral.

The other two shots on goal by ACFC (2-1-0) came in the second half, with Kingsbury making saves on Gilles’ header in the 49th minute and Savannah McCaskill’s arching shot from the right side of the penalty area in the 55th minute.

ACFC led 11-9 in shots before a crowd at Audi Field announced at 7,433.

“”We were feeling the effects of the loss last week, and wanted to put that right,” ACFC coach Freya Coombe said, referring to last Sunday’s 1-0 loss to the Orlando Pride. “We’ve shown that when we’re really on it, we’re a really tough team to break down and beat, as well as being exciting in the offense and the attack. We wanted to get back to that this week and I felt that we did.”
