Four patients were being treated Tuesday at Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs after a horrific vehicle crash in Imperial County that killed at least 15 people and injured several others.
An SUV carrying an estimated 27 people collided with a tractor-trailer hauling gravel early Tuesday, according to Judy Cruz, the emergency department director for El Centro Regional Medical Center.
The crash was reported at about 6 a.m. off Highway 115, just north of Holtville, about 15 miles from the U.S.-Mexico border.
Fourteen people were pronounced dead at the scene, and another person died shortly after at the El Centro hospital, where at least six others were being treated, Cruz said.
At least five others were airlifted to treatment centers. Four patients were being treated at Desert Regional, three of whom are in the intensive care unit, according to Todd Burke, the hospital’s public information officer.
