A 44-year-old man was fatally struck Thursday as he tried to run across the Riverside (91) Freeway.
Herbert Sanders of Riverside was fatally injured at 2:05 a.m. on the westbound 91 just east of Central Avenue, near downtown Riverside, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The agency said that motorists witnessed Sanders attempting to run from the shoulder of the freeway to the center divider. He made it across most lanes but was hit in the fast lane by a sedan.
The motorist stopped, along with a number of other drivers, who tried to render aid, according to the CHP.
No other injuries were reported.
Riverside Fire Department paramedics reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced Sanders dead at the scene.
The westbound 91 was partially closed for more than two hours while a preliminary investigation was conducted.
