The number of COVID-positive patients hospitalized in Riverside County continued to decline, according to the latest data, while 864 new cases were confirmed and 12 new virus-related deaths were reported.

According to the Riverside University Health System, COVID-related hospitalizations countywide dropped to 268 Tuesday, compared to 271 on Monday. The number of those patients in intensive care was 63, down from 65 on Monday.

The cumulative number of COVID cases recorded since the pandemic began in March 2020 stood at 360,743 as of Tuesday, up from 359,879 on Monday.

Officials said on Tuesday a total 5,108 deaths from virus-related complications have been recorded in the past roughly 19 months. The fatalities are trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates and can go back a month, sometimes longer.

The number of known active virus cases countywide Monday was 3,497, up 780 from Monday. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 360,743 — according to the county Executive Office.

Verified patient recoveries countywide were 352,138.
