Two people were killed and another injured when an off-road vehicle rolled down a hillside on the north end of Riverside, authorities said Saturday.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. Friday in the 11300 block of Bentley Street, near Swenson Street, in an area known as La Sierra Hills, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Sgt. Emilio Angulo said the three victims, none of whom was immediately identified, were riding along a ridgeline trail in the all-terrain vehicle when they struck a “large rock, causing the vehicle to veer off the side of the hill.”

The ATV rolled multiple times until coming to rest at the bottom of the canyon, Angulo said.

Riverside Fire Department personnel reached the location minutes later and pronounced two of the occupants dead at the scene, according to Battalion Chief Mike Allen.

He said the third victim suffered moderate injuries and was hoisted out of the canyon by a sheriff’s helicopter crew, then placed in an ambulance and taken to Riverside Community Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Angulo said the accident remains under investigation, and it is still not known whether alcohol or drugs may have been factors in the crash.

Anyone with information about the accident was asked to contact the police department’s Major Accident Investigation Team at 951-826-8722.
