A 21-year-old motorist who died in a head-on collision in Lakeview was identified Friday.
Joshua Vasquez Escamilla of San Jacinto was fatally injured about 5:40 a.m. Thursday on the Ramona Expressway, just west of Hansen Avenue, on the north end of the unincorporated community that borders Nuevo, according to Riverside County coroner’s officials.
California Highway Patrol Officer Juan Quintero said that Escamilla was at the wheel of a 2017 Hyundai Sonata headed west on the expressway when he allowed the four-door sedan to drift across the center median and into opposing traffic lanes.
About that time, a 34-year-old Los Angeles man driving an Isuzu box van approached from the opposite direction on the expressway, going roughly 25 mph, Quintero said.
Quintero said that the Hyundai smashed head-on into the van, “causing major intrusion damage to both vehicles.”
Riverside County Fire Department paramedics arrived within minutes and pronounced Escamilla dead at the scene.
The other motorist, whose identity was not disclosed, suffered moderate injuries and was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley for treatment. There was no word on his condition Friday.
“Alcohol is not believed to be a factor in this collision,” Quintero said, adding that the investigation is ongoing.
