An 18-year-old woman struck and killed on a Mead Valley street was in the middle of crossing it when she was hit by a sedan, whose driver lost control and crashed after running into the young woman, authorities said Monday.

Rosa Martinez of Moreno Valley was fatally injured about 6 p.m. Saturday in the 21000 block of Nandina Avenue, just east of Brown Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officer Javier Navarro said the victim was walking north to south on Nandina when a 19-year-old Perris man in a 2009 Honda Civic approached at an unknown speed from the west.

“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Honda struck the pedestrian,” Navarro said. “The Honda then traveled out of control, overturning and coming to rest on the south shoulder of Nandina.”

Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location within a few minutes and pronounced Martinez dead at the scene.

The driver suffered minor injuries, for which he was treated at Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley.

Navarro said that alcohol and drugs do not appear to be factors in the deadly incident.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the Riverside CHP office at 951-637-8000.
