LA KISS opened training camp Friday at Santa Ana College for their second Arena Football League season, with what coach Bob McMillen described as “group of guys that are excited to be out there.”

“It was incredible,” McMillen said. “It’s been a long time in the Arena League since I’ve had a day like this. It was refreshing, it was eye- opening, it was a great day to have.”

Of the 40 players who began efforts Saturday to earn spots on the 20-player regular season roster, just nine returned from the team that went 3-15 in its inaugural season.

Two off-season acquisitions cited by McMillen were quarterback Adrian McPherson and receiver Thyron Lewis.

“We believe he’s one of the top three or four quarterbacks in this league,” McMillen said. “He has a great arm. He’s also a guy that can off and run and go 50 yards in the blink of an eye.”

The 31-year-old McPherson was the AFL’s Rookie of the Year in 2004, was chosen by the New Orleans Saints in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL draft, played with the AFL’s Grand Rapids Rampage in 2007 and 2008, was the backup quarterback for the Canadian Football League’s Montreal Alouettes from 2008-12, and returned to the AFL in 2013 with the Tampa Bay Storm. He did not play in 2014.

Lewis is a former Westchester High standout who caught 101 passes for 1,525 yards and 37 touchdowns, all career highs, for the Cleveland Gladiators last season.

The KISS will face the San Jose SaberCats in a scrimmage at Honda Center March 19 with free admission. It will open the regular season March 27 at Portland and play its home opener April 11 against the expansion Las Vegas Outlaws.
