Police Thursday released a surveillance image of a suspected arsonist believed to have set five luxury vehicles on fire at a Santa Monica BMW dealership.

The five BMWs were set on fire about 10:30 p.m. Wednesday at Santa Monica BMW at the intersection of Santa Monica Boulevard and 12th Street, said Santa Monica police Sgt. Christopher Smith.

A person was taken into custody, but released, according to media reports.

A woman who was in the area at the time of the arson told a photographer at the scene that she saw the suspect in the act.

“All of sudden this man in a very dark outfit with a jacket on and a hoodie started running across the street toward the BMW dealership over here, and he had a big huge red can, a gas can, I guess, in one hand on the right and in the left hand he had a … not a lighter, but like a bomb type thing, and like a bottle with a cloth and it was on fire, and he doused all of the front vehicles of the BMW dealership, and then he took the lighter and threw it at it,” she said.
