Sierra Madre police warned Wednesday that several residents have nearly fallen victim to scammers claiming to be from the Internal Revenue Service.
If someone calls and says they are from the IRS, the call is likely bogus, police said, adding that residents should not provide any fiscal information to such callers.
According to police, the IRS will not initiate contact with residents by email, text or social media to ask for personal or financial information, or call and demand immediate payment.
There is no “alternative” way to pay taxes, such as using a prepaid debit card, police said.
Anyone who receives such a call should contact the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration.
