Anglers of all ages will be casting lines at Rancho Jurupa Park in Jurupa Valley Saturday, during an event designed to give city kids a feel for the rod and reel.
The Daniel Hernandez Youth Foundation is partnering with the Riverside County Regional Parks Department to host the “Free Fishing Derby” between 9 a.m. and noon.
“This activity is designed to give boys and girls who live in urban areas an opportunity to enjoy a fishing experience in, or close to, their own neighborhood, with poles, reels, tackle, bait and assistance provided,” Hernandez said.
He said Rancho Jurupa Park lake will be stocked with rainbow trout specifically for the derby, which will include a free lunch and prize drawing.
Children under 15 years old can cast their lines without a fishing license. However, state law requires participants who are 16 and older to obtain a license from the California Department of Fish & Wildlife, and agency representatives are slated to be on hand for the event, according to organizers.
