A motorist killed when his vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with a big rig in Moreno Valley was identified Tuesday as a 28-year-old San Jacinto man.
Nicholas Anthony Gonzalez was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported about 10:45 p.m. Sunday on Gilman Springs Road, west of Bridge Street.
According to the California Highway Patrol, Gonzalez was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Silverado when, for reasons still under investigation, he “made an unsafe turn onto the wrong side of the road, to the left of the solid yellow lines” and smashed into a big rig who was driving in the opposite direction. Gonzalez’s truck then collided with another vehicle whose driver escaped injury.
Debris associated with the initial crash flew into the area of nearby vehicles, which resulted in additional non-injury traffic collisions, CHP Officer Matt Napier said.
Gilman Springs Road was closed in both directions near the crash site for several hours as crews cleaned up fuel that spilled from the big rig.
