A man who was a staff sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II will be honored as the Military Hero of the Game on his 99th birthday at Wednesday evening’s Los Angeles Dodgers-Atlanta Braves game at Dodger Stadium.

Robert Sawyer Sr. was drafted in October 1942 and completed training in bombs and fuses. He joined a special services team with the primary duty of developing special bombs and fuses and correcting errors on the bomb racks. He worked on such planes as the AT-6, A-20 Havoc, A-26 Invader and B-25 bomber.

Actor/comedian Gabriel Iglesias will throw a ceremonial first pitch in connection with Mexican Heritage Night, which will also include a pregame performance by Mariachi Sol de Mexico de Jose Hernandez, which will also perform the Mexican national anthem.

More than 20,000 Mexican Heritage Night ticket packages were sold, the most for a special event ticket package in Major League Baseball history, a Dodger official said. The package included a Mexican-themed Dodger jersey, with the familiar script Dodgers in green and red and green shoulders, representing two of the three colors of Mexico’s flag.
