The city’s airport agency put out a call Thursday for firms interested in providing design and construction services on an automated people mover that will carry passengers through Los Angeles International Airport and connect them to the public transit rail system.
Los Angeles World Airports — the agency that operates the city-owned LAX — issued a request for qualifications Thursday, the first major step taken to put in motion the long-anticipated project.
The people mover is expected to feature six stations along two miles of an elevated track. It is a major component of a plan to connect the Metro light rail system with LAX, and is expected to reduce the number of vehicles on roads within and near the airport.
The project also is part of a larger construction program at LAX that includes a rental car facility, a pair of intermodal transportation facilities and road improvements.
The automated people mover “is a critical project for the future modernization of LAX and is the promised solution to providing reliable, time- certain access to airline terminals for passengers, employees and other users,” LAWA Chief Executive Officer Deborah Flint said. “Today’s release of the RFQ is an important step toward delivering on that promise.”
Companies that make the RFQ’s shortlist in September will be asked to submit formal proposals to LAWA.
