Autopsies conducted on an elderly couple murdered in their Glendale home showed both had multiple injuries, but decomposition of the bodies prevented pinpointing the cause of death.

Assistant Coroner Chief Ed Winter said the results of toxicology tests are needed to determine how Verna Irene Scheiern, 82, and her 77-year-old husband, William Scheiern, were killed. The results take several weeks.

The couple’s 34-year-old grandson, who was living with the elderly pair, is still listed as “a person of interest” in the investigation.

Nathaniel Scheiern was involved in a solo car crash several days before his grandparents were found dead, and he remains hospitalized.

“His medical condition is stable but serious,” said Tahnee Lightfoot, a public information officer for the police department.

The bodies of the couple were found in their home in the 600 block of Alexander Street after police received a call about 9:30 a.m. Sunday from a concerned family member who hadn’t heard from them.

Arriving officers found the door to the home open, and they went inside and found the decomposed bodies.
