A car that caught fire Tuesday alongside Interstate 15 south of Corona triggered a brush fire that scorched nearly an acre before it was stopped.

The non-injury blaze was reported at 11:47 a.m. Tuesday on southbound I-15, near Temescal Canyon Road, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said multiple engine crews were sent to the location and found a Toyota Camry engulfed in flames, which extended into vegetation on the shoulder of the freeway, spreading at a moderate rate.

The motorist escaped the car before it was consumed, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Officers shut down the southbound slow lane for public safety.

Firefighters established hose lays within an hour, stopping the fire’s forward rate of spread at 12:40 p.m., officials said.

The Toyota was completely destroyed.

The cause of the car fire was under investigation.
