But pushback has been fierce to his Saturday post.
Here are five reasons why the liberal documentary filmmaker is wrong, according to social media voices:
1. Moore was wrong before
The Michigan native predicted Mitt Romney would win in 2012.
“Mitt Romney is going to raise more money than Barack Obama,” Moore said in August 2012. “That should guarantee his victory. I think people should start to practice the words ‘President Romney.’ To assume that the other side are just a bunch of ignoramuses who are supported by people who believe that Adam and Eve rode on dinosaurs 6,000 years ago is to completely misjudge the opposition.”
In his 2,700-word essay, Moore wrote: “President Trump. Go ahead and say the words, ‘cause you’ll be saying them for the next four years: ‘PRESIDENT TRUMP.'”
2. Moore is using reverse psychology
And he’s expected to post an essay after the Democratic National Convention explaining how Hillary Clinton will win, some have said.
3. Moore’s conflict of interest
He’s hoping for a Republican victory so he can make another blockbuster movie and line his pockets.
“Michael Moore wants a ‘Fahrenheit 911’ sequel so desperately, he’s willing to let Trump win,” said one commenter on Twitter.
Said another: “Let’s be honest, Michael Moore needs/wants a Trump presidency for his next movie.”
4. Moore doesn’t want to move to Canada
If Moore truly thought Trump would win, he’d be applying for Canadian citizenship now. “Will @MMFlint eat his way to Canada if Trump wins?” said one tweet. Another: “To those refusing to vote Trump in the General: Michael Moore will be publishing his bus schedule to Canada in August.”
5. Moore underestimates voter intelligence
Moore wrote: “If you believe Hillary Clinton is going to beat Trump with facts and smarts and logic, then you obviously missed the past year of 56 primaries and caucuses where 16 Republican candidates tried that and every kitchen sink they could throw at Trump and nothing could stop his juggernaut.”
But a general election isn’t a primary, and the dynamics of state-by-state electoral politics have to be factored in. Also: If people are so illogical, why does Moore make movies appealing to reason?
