A motorist was killed Sunday in a two-vehicle crash on the San Diego (405) Freeway next to the Long Beach Airport.

The crash was on the northbound 405 Freeway, approaching Cherry Avenue. It was reported to the California Highway Patrol at 12:15 a.m.

A motorist driving a 1990 Honda tried to merge onto the “slip ramp” exit lane towards the Cherry Avenue offramp, according to a CHP report. But he drove onto the curb of the raised median that divides the exit lane from the 405’s main four lanes.

The Honda then swerved left, across all four lanes of the freeway, and hit the center median wall. It stopped in the path of a 2013 Toyota, which hit it.

The Honda driver died there. He has only been publicly identified as a 27-year-old from Bell Gardens.

The Toyota’s driver, a 25-year-old person from Duarte, was not injured. Both wore seatbelts and were the only people involved.
