A motorist managed to swim to safety after driving a vehicle into the San Gabriel River in Long Beach late Friday afternoon.
The vehicle came off the westbound Garden Grove (22) Freeway about 5 p.m. and ended up fully submerged below College Park Drive, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Divers checked the vehicle but found no other victims, Long Beach Fire Department spokesman Brian Fisk said.
The driver was checked out at the scene and released, Fisk said.
