A July 9 arraignment date is scheduled for an 18-year-old man charged with nearly killing an acquaintance who was shot in Anaheim a week ago and remains hospitalized.

Mark Anthony Miller Jr. was charged Thursday with attempted murder, with sentencing enhancement allegations of attempted premeditated murder and discharge of a firearm causing great bodily injury, according to court records.

Miller is accused of shooting the 20-year-old victim, whose name was withheld, in the 2700 block of West Yale Avenue about 10:15 p.m. on June 21, Anaheim police Sgt. Shane Carringer said. Investigators did not disclose details of the relationship between the defendant and victim or a possible motive.

Police officers who were clearing an unrelated call were driving by when they saw the victim “suffering from obvious injuries” on Yale, Carringer said. The officers called paramedics, who rushed the man to an area hospital in critical condition, Carringer said.

“It’s pretty miraculous that he’s still alive,” Carringer said Monday afternoon. “If they drove by five minutes later, he would have died.”

Miller is being held on $1 million bail.
