The number of COVID-19-positive patients in Riverside County hospitals decreased by 11 people to 64, according to the latest county figures.

Of those patients, 12 were in intensive care, down two from Sunday’s reported state figures, according to the Riverside University Health System.

The RUHS on Monday also reported 308 new positive COVID tests and one additional virus-related death, bringing the county’s aggregate number of cases to 597,101 and its pandemic death toll at 6,446.

Fatalities are considered trailing indicators because of delays processing death certificates, meaning some deaths may have actually occurred weeks ago, according to health officials. Health officials have said that the vast majority of people who die of COVID complications have underlying conditions, mainly hypertension, diabetes and heart disease.

The number of known active virus cases in the county was 2,653 as of Monday. The active count is derived by subtracting deaths and recoveries from the current total — 597,101. Verified patient recoveries countywide are 588,002.
