Two women thought to be in their 70s were killed Thursday when the car they were in slammed into a concrete pole in a Ralphs supermarket parking garage in Glendale.
The crash occurred about 1:15 p.m. near the street-level entrance of the underground parking garage in the 600 block of East Wilson Avenue, city spokesman Tom Lorenz said.
The victims were pronounced dead at the scene, he said.
The woman driving the car apparently lost control of the vehicle and struck the pillar at a high rate of speed, Lorenz said.
Police said the driver of the vehicle drove into the south entrance of the garage off Wilson Avenue and raced through the garage for unknown reasons.
It was unclear if the driver may have suffered from a medical condition or if there was a mechanical issue with the sedan.
