Reports of the smell of leaking natural gas prompted the evacuation of the Nordstrom store at the Westfield Century City shopping center Tuesday evening but there no atypical readings or medical complaints.

The Los Angeles Fire Department was informed of the reports around 6:20 p.m. and the store was evacuated before firefighters arrived, the department’s Margaret Stewart said.

There were no atypical readings on the five-gas meter, a portable detection device that provides readings of the atmospheric presence of carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen sulfide, hydrogen cyanide and methane, Stewart said.

An LAFD HazMat squad was sent to the store to conduct a detailed investigation, Stewart said.
