A man who allegedly shot and killed another man in the Westlake area of Los Angeles was behind bars Monday.
Alexander Ramos, 20, of Los Angeles, is suspected in the shooting that occurred about 5:10 a.m. Thursday near West Sixth Street and South Lafayette Park Place, according to the Los Angeles Police Department. He was booked on suspicion of murder and was held on $1 million bail, according to the LAPD and the sheriff’s department.
Ramos was tentatively scheduled to appear in court in downtown Los Angeles sometime Monday, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Jose Villela-Arroyo, 30, of Monterey Park, died at the shooting scene, coroner’s Assistant Chief Ed Winter said.
The suspect was detained by officers near West Fifth Street and South Virgil Avenue after he allegedly stole a bicycle from someone and tried to get away, police said.
Villela-Arroyo’s brother is Joseph Villela, the policy director of the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights of Los Angeles, known as CHIRLA.
“We are devastated by his absence,” Joseph Villela said. “Jose was a friend and great coworker to many, but most importantly he was a very important family member to our family. He was my young brother, he was my friend.”
The Villela family has set up a GoFundMe account to assist Jose’s daughter and cover funeral-related costs. You can visit the page here.
