A motorcyclist was struck and killed by a Metro Rail train in Long Beach Wednesday evening.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. Wednesday when a Metro A (Blue) Line train near the Long Beach Boulevard and Eighth Street grade crossing struck a motorcycle, according to Metro spokesman Dave Sotero.

Long Beach Police Department officers arrived at the location and attempted life-saving measures before the arrival of Long Beach Fire Department paramedics, who pronounced the motorcyclist dead at the scene, according to Long Beach Police Department Lt. Danielle Quinones.

“Metro extends its heartfelt condolences to the motorcyclist’s family and friends. We are working closely with the Long Beach Police Department as they investigate the cause of this incident,” Metro said in a statement. “We are committed to ensuring the safety of Metro’s customers and the communities we serve. In fact, it’s our highest priority.”

Sotero said Metro was operating shuttle buses Wednesday evening in the Transit Mall Loop area to replace peak-hour services on the A Line.

The crash was under an ongoing investigation by Long Beach Police Department detectives.
