A motorcyclist was fatally injured when he apparently failed to negotiate a roadway curve in Highgrove and slammed into a light pole, authorities said Friday.

The fatality shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Grazing Lane and Pigeon Pass Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said the victim, whose identity was not immediately released, was traveling at an unconfirmed speed when he careened into the pole on Pigeon Pass. The location is at the base of Box Springs Mountain Reserve Park.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were first to reach the location and attempted resuscitative measures. However, paramedics pronounced the man dead less than 15 minutes later.

The intersection was shut down for 90 minutes while a preliminary investigation was conducted and the wreckage was cleared.
