An alleged drunken driver probably woke up Sunday with a headache and a lot of regret as police said he crashed a stolen car after leading officers on a brief pursuit that began in Irwindale.
He’s due in court Tuesday.
Officers on a DUI enforcement patrol spotted a vehicle run a stop sign at Ramona Boulevard and Elton Street, Irwindale Police Sgt. George Zendejas said.
The driver of the 1994 red Nissan truck, Miguel Higuera Lujan, 36, failed to pull over when police tried to stop him and initiated a pursuit that lasted about a mile, Zendejas said.
Lujan drove onto the basketball court of Hilda Solis Park in Baldwin Park and exited the moving vehicle, which crashed into a chain link fence, he said.
Police gave chase on foot and eventually caught up to Lujan, a Baldwin Park resident, and took him into custody without incident, the sergeant said.
Officers later learned the vehicle Lujan was driving was reported stolen.
The suspect was arrested on suspicion of grand theft auto and driving under the influence after the incident Friday just before midnight, Zendejas said.
He has a court date at West Covina Court on Tuesday and was being held in lieu of $25,000 bail.
