The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday that it will conduct a DUI checkpoint later this week at an undisclosed location in Rancho Mirage.
The checkpoint will be held Friday from 6 p.m. until 2 a.m. the following day at a location with a history of impaired driving-related crashes, according to the department.
“Impaired driving is preventable,” Lt. Chris Ternes said. “It’s a choice. If you’ve been drinking or consuming drugs that impair, make the right choice by finding a sober driver or alternate transportation to take you places.”
Impaired driving includes driving under the influence of alcohol, marijuana and some prescription medication and over-the-counter drugs.
A first-time DUI charge could cost drivers about $13,500 in fines and penalties, authorities said. Impaired drivers could also have their license suspended.
