Two lanes of a Golden State (5) Freeway overpass in Glendale were ordered shut down for several hours Saturday when a large pothole was discovered that went all the way through the bridge.
The discovery was made at about 1:20 p.m. Saturday when an officer noticed concrete debris had fallen in lanes on Western Avenue from the freeway above and could see the hole in the freeway when he looked up, authorities said. It was not clear whether the officer was with the California Highway Patrol or Glendale Police Department.
The hole was in the No. 4 lane of the southbound freeway at Western Avenue. The CHP issued a Sigalert at 2:45 p.m. shutting down that lane while Caltrans checked the integrity of the bridge.
At 3:41 p.m., the CHP added adjacent lane No. 3 to the Sigalert and closed the Western Avenue off-ramp.
