A 35-year-old man was sentenced Friday to 50 years to life in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting an ex-girlfriend’s daughter from 6 to 9 years old in Santa Ana.
Sergio Orosio-Martinez was convicted May 29 of three counts of sexual intercourse or sodomy on a child 10 years or younger and a count of forcible lewd act on a child, all felonies.
Deputy District Attorney Kelcie Anne Wiemann argued for 83 years to life in prison.
Orosio-Martinez was convicted of four separate acts of sexual abuse and should have consecutive sentences for them, the prosecutor argued.
“He committed numerous acts of sexual abuse by manipulation and grooming and was ultimately successful because of the vulnerabilities of the victim,” Wiemann said in court papers. “Testimony by the victim at jury trial showed that he attempted to manipulate the victim into thinking he had not abused her, and he bought her toys and offered her money tied to the sexual abuse.”
The girl came forward after the defendant invited her and her mother to his wedding because she thought his fiancee should know about the abuse, prosecutors said in court papers.
The girl said the molestation started in 2017, when she was about 6 or 7 years old and he lived with her and her mother.
Prosecutors said Orosio-Martinez and the girl’s mother broke up in 2017 and the victim moved with her mother to San Bernardino, but he remained in their lives and would visit with them regularly.
“Here, the disturbing result of the defendant’s actions will long outlast any custodial term this court will now impose,” Wiemann said in her sentencing brief. “The defendant deserves a just punishment for the sexual assaults committed upon this young victim. He placed himself in a position of trust by continuing to hold himself out as a father figure to the victim. He then repeatedly took advantage of his position of trust when he violated the innocence of the victim in this case.”
