Sheriff Robert Luna and homicide investigators will seek the public’s help Thursday in tracking down the person who fatally shot a 13-year-old boy at a Pico Rivera gas station where his mother was working.
The shooting was reported about 11:45 p.m. Saturday in the 8800 block of Whittier Boulevard, where the child was pronounced dead at the scene, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.
He was identified by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Saith Toledo Mendez.
Sheriff’s officials said the suspect was in the rear passenger seat of a vehicle parked near the gas pumps, but exited the vehicle and shot Saith “in the back without prior interaction.” The teen was at the gas station waiting for his mother to finish her shift, authorities said.
Sheriff’s officials said the suspect was last seen fleeing the area on foot.
Luna and other officials will hold a 9 a.m. news conference Thursday asking anyone with information to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Callers who wish to remain anonymous may call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477 or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
