Investigators tried to determine Wednesday what caused the death of a baby whose decomposing body was found under a cardboard box and debris in an alley in Long Beach, police said.

Officers went to an alley in the area of 67th Street and Gardenia Avenue around 4:20 p.m. Tuesday in response to a report that an infant’s burned body had been found, said Long Beach Police Detective Claudia Lopez.

It turned out that the body was “not burned, but in a stage of decomposition that would give it that appearance,” Lopez said.

An autopsy is needed to find out how the baby died or if it was stillborn, according to police. The baby’s gender could not be immediately determined.

Anyone with information on the baby was asked to call Long Beach Police at (562) 570-7260.
