A 63-year-old man who died on a hiking trail in La Quinta was identified as a resident of the city, as authorities continued their investigation into the death Wednesday.

Michael Pavelec was found unconscious by mountain bikers around 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, about 2.3 miles up the Boo Hoff Trail, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Sheriff’s deputies also responded to the area of Calle Tecate and Avenida Alvarado, according to Sgt. Robert Martinez of the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Upon arrival, they found a man unresponsive. Paramedics attempted live-saving measures but Pavelec was pronounced dead at the scene.

The cause of Pavelec’s death was not immediately clear.

“There is no evidence of foul play,” Martinez said.
