An 18-year-old man who was fatally shot in South Los Angeles was identified Tuesday.
Los Angeles Police Department officers responded at 12:49 a.m. Wednesday to the 3600 block of Sixth Avenue, near 36th Street, regarding a shots fired call. When they arrived at the scene, the officers learned the victim and another 18-year-old man were engaged in an argument when the victim was shot in the chest, an LAPD spokesman told City News Service.
Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics took the victim to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.
He was identified Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner as Yandel Fernandez.
The second man ran from the scene in an unknown direction. It was unclear if the shooting was accidental.
According to the GoFundMe page established to raise funds to pay for Fernandez’s funeral, Fernandez was in his room with a family friend while everyone else in the house was sleeping when they had heard gunshots coming from his room. The other residents ran to the room, found him on the ground unresponsive while his friend said the shooting was an accident.
The page described Fernandez as a “kind soul, very funny, family guy.”
As of just before 10 p.m. Tuesday, $7,585 was raised, surpassing the goal of $5,000.
The funeral is set for Feb. 13.
