A motorcyclist who allegedly fled from Riverside County sheriff’s deputies when they attempted to stop him collided with a car at a Perris intersection and was fatally injured, authorities said Friday.

The fatality occurred shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday at Placentia and Redlands avenues, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The Riverside County Sheriff’s Department said that the rider, whose identity was not immediately released, caught the attention of a patrol unit for an alleged traffic violation at Frontage and Nuevo roads, near Interstate 215.

When deputies signaled the suspect to pull over, he “fled at a high rate of speed, prompting a pursuit,” according to a sheriff’s statement.

The patrolmen were unable to keep up with the Honda Superhawk as it sped away eastbound, losing sight of the bike in the area of Placentia Avenue and North Perris Boulevard.

CHP Officer Javier Navarro said that about two blocks east of that location, as the rider sped eastbound on Placentia, approaching Redlands, a Honda Accord pulled into the intersection going northbound on Redlands, culminating in the bike slamming into the driver’s side of the sedan.

The motorcyclist was hurled onto the roadway, suffering catastrophic injuries, Navarro said.

The collision occurred a block away from a county fire station, whose personnel immediately went to the scene to render aid. The rider was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where he died Thursday night.

The driver of the Honda Accord was not injured.

Navarro said the CHP is handling the investigation.
