A wrong-way motorist died Tuesday after colliding head-on with another vehicle on eastbound Interstate 10 near Indio.

The crash was reported shortly after 4:40 a.m. Tuesday east of Dillon Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A Nissan Sentra was traveling westbound in the eastbound No. 1 lane of I-10 when it collided head-on with a Toyota Camry that was traveling eastbound in the same lane, the CHP said.

Paramedics arrived to find one vehicle pinned against the center divider, requiring extrication, the agency said.

The Nissan driver was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. His identity was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Both vehicles were occupied by a lone male driver.

The Toyota driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to John F. Kennedy Memorial Hospital in Indio.

CHP officials said the Nissan driver was suspected of being impaired at the time of the crash.

The investigation was ongoing, and anyone with additional information was asked to call 760-772-5300.
