A fire that erupted Thursday at an East Hemet home where multiple dogs were on the premises caused significant damage but no injuries.

The blaze was reported at 1 p.m. Thursday in the 41300 block of Merriwood Drive, near Cornell Street, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The agency said that a half-dozen engine crews were sent to the location and encountered “black smoke and heavy fire from the garage.”

Firefighters immediately established hose lays and prevented the flames from extending to neighboring properties.

Department of Animal Services personnel were requested to provide assistance after firefighters found an unspecified number of canines at the house, all of which were reportedly saved.

At 1:35 p.m., the fire was completely contained, according to reports from the scene.

Crews were expected to finish mopping up by 4:30 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
