Officers responding to a call of an assault with a deadly weapon in Boyle Heights wound up shooting the man suspected of wielding a large knife with a foam bullet before he was hospitalized with stable vital signs.
The officers were called at 1:36 a.m. Saturday to an apartment at 3056 Glenn Ave. where a suspect was reported to have a large knife, a Los Angeles Police Department spokesman told City News Service.
“When the officers arrived to the area of the call, they encountered that armed suspect in front of the residence.,” according to an official LAPD statement. “In an attempt to de-escalate, the officers gave the suspect commands to drop the knife, which he refused. The suspect advanced toward the officers and an OIS occurred.”
The officers deployed a 40 mm foam round to stop the suspect, police said.
Officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived and took the suspect to a hospital by ambulance, police said. No officers or civilians were injured.
A knife was recovered at the scene and will be booked as evidence, police said.
The area of Glenn Avenue and Dacotah Street was expected to be closed to traffic for the lengthy shooting investigation, police said.
