The Los Angeles Times Monday won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of the San Bernardino terrorist shooting and its aftermath.
The Pulitzer board cited the newspaper “for exceptional reporting, including both local and global perspectives, on the shooting in San Bernardino and the terror investigation that followed.”
On Dec. 2, 14 people were killed and about two dozen others were wounded in the deadliest terrorist attack on American soil since Sept. 11.
Inland Empire resident Syed Rizwan Farook, 28, and his emigre wife, 27- year-old Tashfeen Malik — carried out the massacre at the Inland Regional Center where staff had gathered for a Christmas potlock. They were killed in a shootout with law enforcement officers a few hours later.
Farook’s longtime neighbor, 24-year-old Enrique Marquez Jr. of Riverside, is charged with five felonies in connection with the shooting rampage.
Authorities say he purchased the two semiautomatic rifles that the perpetrators used to carry out the attack, and at one time conspired with Farook to commit killing sprees at Riverside City College and on the Riverside (91) Freeway.
The Times has now won 44 Pulitzers, considered American journalism’s highest honor. Steve Lopez, a Times columnist, was a 2016 finalist in the commentary category.
