Coachella’s planning commission voted this week to recommend the City Council prohibit data centers in the city, with councilmembers scheduled to decide the matter next month.
In a special meeting Wednesday evening, the planning commission unanimously approved the motion to recommend City Council adopt an ordinance, adding a chapter to the city’s municipal code, essentially banning data center uses in the city.
However, commission members added that city staff further define and expand the definitions of data center applications under the ordinance, and have staff research how to include the subject to the November ballot in order to allow the public to vote on the ban.
The items will be going before City Council on Aug. 12.
