A 28-year-old motorist was killed when he evidently lost control of his car and slammed into a tree at the edge of a park near downtown Riverside, authorities said Thursday.

Gino Stewart of Riverside was fatally injured just after 10 a.m. Wednesday on South Palm Avenue, just east of Beechwood Place, at the west end of Bonaminio Park, according to the Riverside Police Department.

Detective Steve Espinosa said Stewart was traveling southbound when his car swung off the two-lane corridor and plowed into a palm tree.

No other vehicles were involved.

Riverside Fire Department crews reached the location within 10 minutes and pronounced the victim dead at the scene.

It was not immediately known whether alcohol or drugs may have contributed to the crash.

An autopsy on Stewart was pending Thursday.
