Thousands of Long Beach customers of Southern California Edison remained without power Monday in coastal neighborhoods, but an end to the outage was in sight.
The outage was reported at 6:40 p.m. Sunday and boundaries were west of Quincy Avenue, east of Alamitos Avenue, north of Ocean Boulevard and south of Seventh Street.
Various media reported more than 26,000 customers were initially without power.
As of 1:35 a.m. Monday, Edison reported that a field investigator had determined the necessary repairs and a repair crew was on the way. Edison also reported that 16,456 customers remained without power.
At 3:28 a.m., SCE estimated that power would be restored by 8 a.m. Monday. But that was extended to 12 p.m. just after 6 a.m.
The Long Beach Post reported that the blackout was caused when an underground electrical vault caught fire on Broadway near Newport Avenue near the Bluff Heights Neighborhood. Edison subsequently de-energized the line.
