A cooling trend will begin across the Southland Friday following days of extreme heat and humidity, with temperatures expected to fall below normal this weekend, according to the National Weather Service.
Cooler and less humid air will move into the region as an upper-level ridge that trapped tropical moisture and brought high temperatures to Southern California begins to weaken, forecasters said.
“The very hot and muggy weather has been the main story as of late, but today should be the last day of these truly oppressive conditions for Southwest Californians,” the NWS said Thursday.
The cooling trend is expected to continue through the weekend, with temperatures falling below normal for mid-September by Saturday and Sunday.
Most areas will see temperatures in the 70s along the coast and 80s inland, according to the NWS.
Forecasters said tropical moisture that contributed to the recent muggy conditions will also move out of the region.
“The combination of cooler temps and drier air will lead to significantly more tolerable weather across the region,” the NWS said.
The marine layer is also expected to return, bringing evening and morning low clouds to many coastal areas.
Increasing onshore flow will bring some breezy conditions this weekend.
Temperatures are expected to remain below seasonal averages through Wednesday, with morning low clouds possible each day.
A ridge could begin building back toward the region Thursday, bringing the possibility of another warming trend, but forecasters said any warming is not expected to approach the heat experienced this week.
