Plans were moving forward Wednesday for a major exhibition in Paris featuring 164 works from The Broad museum in downtown Los Angeles, marking the largest presentation of its collection ever mounted outside the city.

The exhibition, titled “The Broad Collection — Los Angeles in Paris,” will run from April 21 through Aug. 30, 2027, at the Fondation Louis Vuitton, museum officials announced Tuesday.

The exhibition will feature works by Andy Warhol, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Roy Lichtenstein, Cindy Sherman, Keith Haring and other prominent artists from The Broad’s collection of postwar and contemporary art, according to museum.

The two museums are collaborating on the exhibition as The Broad continues construction of a major expansion scheduled to open in 2028, ahead of the Olympic and Paralympic Games in Los Angeles.

“We are two quite young institutions, both over a decade old, and we share a common purpose to present a deeper understanding of 20th- and 21st-century art,” Joanne Heyler, founding director and president of The Broad, said in a statement. “As we build an expansion that will welcome even more visitors to The Broad in L.A. in 2028, this extensive exhibition in Paris allows us to share the founding vision of Eli and Edythe Broad to reach as wide an audience as possible, and highlights their dedication to artists as vital to understanding complexity in our world.”

The exhibition will trace developments in American art from Pop Art through contemporary movements, with works representing artistic communities in New York and Los Angeles, museum officials said.

Among the other featured artists are John Baldessari, Mark Bradford, Chris Burden, Barbara Kruger, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, Ed Ruscha and Kara Walker. The exhibition will also include works by Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami and William Kentridge.

Recent additions to The Broad’s collection by Los Angeles artists Sayre Gomez, Lauren Halsey, Patrick Martinez and Laura Owens will also be displayed.

The collection was assembled by philanthropists Eli and Edythe Broad, who established The Broad Art Foundation’s lending library in 1984. The museum opened on Grand Avenue in September 2015 and has welcomed nearly 8 million visitors, according to museum officials.

Eli Broad died in 2021.

Suzanne Pagé, artistic director of the Fondation Louis Vuitton, praised the collection for its emphasis on artists whose work addresses contemporary social issues. Pagé said the exhibition will also give French audiences an opportunity to discover additional artists from the California art scene.

The exhibition will occupy the Fondation Louis Vuitton’s Frank Gehry-designed building in Paris, which opened in October 2014. Heyler and Pagé will serve as curators, working with Ed Schad of The Broad and Olivier Michelon of the Fondation Louis Vuitton. A fully illustrated catalog featuring all 164 works, along with new commentary and essays, will accompany the exhibition, officials said.

Meanwhile, The Broad’s expansion in downtown Los Angeles is expected to increase its gallery space by 70%, allowing the museum to display more works from its growing collection. Construction began in April 2025, with the new building designed by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, the architectural firm responsible for the original museum.

The Broad’s existing galleries will remain open to visitors throughout construction, museum officials said.
