A 24-year-old man died Sunday after he reportedly drove a vehicle the wrong way and crashed into another car on the 5 Freeway in San Juan Capistrano, authorities said.
The California Highway Patrol received calls around 1:45 a.m. that a white BMW was traveling southbound on the northbound San Diego (405) Freeway near Sand Canyon Avenue, CHP Officer Jose Lopez said.
The vehicle transitioned onto the 5 Freeway, still going the wrong way, at a high rate of speed in the carpool lane, passed the Corona del Mar (73) Freeway and collided head-on with a Toyota Camry.
The driver of the BMW, identified as Brian Bobadilla of Downey, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Orange County coroner’s office.
The driver and one passenger in the Toyota were taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Lopez said.
