Dustin Sean Ross McDonald, 25, who was sentenced last month to the lengthy prison term, allegedly attacked the correctional officer about 4:45 p.m. Wednesday, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
As the officer was preparing to hand out the evening meal, McDonald punched and stabbed the officer with an “inmate-manufactured weapon,” according to prison officials.
The officer suffered four puncture wounds to his face and one on his left arm, officials said. McDonald also allegedly picked up the officer’s baton during the struggle and swung it at him, authorities said.
The officer was able to retrieve the baton and defend himself with it, and McDonald suffered two cuts as a result, officials said. The guard was treated at a hospital and sent home, officials said.
McDonald, who has been sent to another prison, received the maximum punishment Oct. 14 for killing 23-year-old Aaron Chavez and wounding his friends Ashlee Caldwell and Ingrid Gonzalez on Aug. 12, 2014, in Santa Ana.
Prosecutors said the shootings were payback for being sold fake drugs.
